Dual-qualified lawyer and medical doctor bolsters Keystone’s Life Sciences and Pharmaceuticals practice

Keystone Law hires top litigator and ex-City lawyer and partner, Dr Sam Samaratunga

Sam’s practice focuses on handling litigation and regulatory issues affecting the life sciences and pharmaceutical sectors, with particular expertise in defending claims brought against pharmaceutical and healthcare industry clients.

His client range spans from start-up and small-sized companies to mid-size companies and multinationals. As well as acting on unitary claims, Sam has acted on some of the largest and most complex pharmaceutical product liability group (multi-claimant) actions brought in the UK. These include high profile cases such as representing some of the leading pharmaceutical manufacturers in the High Court in successfully defending product liability claims brought by individuals in relation to alleged injuries following the administration of Measles Mumps Rubella vaccine (MMR Group Litigation), third-generation combined oral contraceptive medication (OC Group Litigation) and as a result of exposure to anti-epilepsy medication during pregnancy (The FAC Group Litigation).

Aside from his impressive legal career, Sam is a qualified General Practitioner (GP) and holds a 1st-class honours degree in Immunology. He was a “LOCOG Games Maker” at the London 2012 Olympic Games and headed up the LOCOG anti-doping team covering football at Wembley Stadium, reflecting his interest in the scientific and medical aspects of alleged doping violations using chemical substances.

Keystone’s Managing Director and Founder, James Knight, says of Sam’s arrival:

“Welcoming Sam to Keystone marks the serious expansion of our capabilities in terms of product liability, personal injury and clinical negligence claims. His extensive expertise in this area is a perfect complement to our 48-strong Litigation team specialising across a wide range of sectors.”

Dr Sam Samaratunga adds:

“Joining Keystone is without question a smart move for both me and my clients. It allows me to offer a bespoke, flexible and cost effective service, whilst at the same time providing a responsive, professional approach and access to senior, experienced colleagues with a wide range of expertise in my sector and beyond. It is refreshing and exciting to be part of such an innovative and fast-growing law firm offering a real alternative to clients.”
